Dahlia Rooted Cuttings

We started selling SURPRISE ME rooted cuttings and dahlia tubers this week at our local Farmer's Market! It’s always so thrilling to send dahlias home with our local flower friends. We know you’re just as excited about growing your new dahlias, so be sure to watch the emails for tips and tricks on how to care for your new plant babies.

We want you to have the most incredible dahlias you’ve ever had this year, so here are some helpful tips about what to do after you receive your rooted cuttings or your dahlia tubers.

DIRECTIONS: For Your Rooted Cuttings

1. Remove from the packaging immediately.  Inspect your plants to make sure they made the trip safely, and let them breathe. (They’ll feel the same way you do after a road trip!)

 2. Allow your plant to acclimate to your growing zone for at least 2-3 days. We don’t recommend planting your dahlia cuttings immediately into your garden, as this might be too stressful for them. We do our best to harden off the cuttings and give them a great head start. But, Your dahlia cuttings need a little time to get used to your garden’s temperature, wind, and sunlight/shade level/day length. We recommend starting in a very protected spot, then gradually exposing the plant to your garden situation before finally planting.

3. Choose a place in your yard that gets a full 6-8 hours of sun and also drains well. Before you plant, take a peek at your forecast. If there is a lot of rain predicted, it may be better to wait to plant, depending on your soil. If this is your first time growing Dahlias, I wrote a blog post to help you successfully plant your rooted Dahlia starts. Be sure to protect your cuttings from family pets, curious toddlers, and voracious bugs while they acclimate!

4. Plant out in your garden leaving the biodegradable "dahlia diaper" on. I have already up potted them in 4" pots for you, plant your rooted dahlia cuttings right into your garden, or a large pot, and water.

Dahlias don’t unfurl much once they’ve been cut so it’s important to not pick them too early. Harvest when blooms are three-quarters of the way open. Check the back of each flower head, looking for firm and lush petals versus papery or slightly dehydrated ones. Place stripped stem in almost boiling water to sear stem ends and allow to cool for one hour. Expect a vase life of about 5 days.
